Food blogger and DIY enthusiast Vikkie Lee chose a Wilsonart laminate worktop for photogenic style and hardwearing practicality.
Vikkie knew she wanted to add a second, smaller kitchen in her conservatory but needed it to perform several functions: a utility room with laundry facilities, a bright space to film for her blog, and a beautiful backdrop for photographing food, as well as a space to prepare it.
Also known as @tastefullyvikkie and @thecarpenters_daughter, Vikkie says she knew what she was looking for and as soon as she saw her Wilsonart laminate worktop in Marbre Veneto, knew it was the one.
“I had in mind that a white marble backdrop was what I wanted for my blog, but it had to be a practical kitchen worktop too. I absolutely love it. It’s bright, fresh and low maintenance and I know paying a kitchen company can be very expensive, so I decided to give it a go and fit the mini kitchen myself.”
Vikkie chose 3m lengths of Marbre Veneto and filmed the fitting process for her blog and social media channels, learning to fit each part of the kitchen including units, plumbing, sink and finally the worktop.
She says, “It was daunting at first, but I taught myself how to do everything and documented it online. I want other women to think that if I can do it, then they can too. Once I had finished, I had a decent amount leftover and thought it would be great to turn it into a stylish desk.”
Using the offcut, Vikkie got creative turning the laminate piece into a desk using silver end caps, hair pin legs, and IKEA trays for drawers.
And the outcome? Vikkie says the new surfaces have transformed her workspace and her creative output.
“I love how the worktop looks and it’s perfect on camera. It has instantly transformed my photoshoots; I also kept the sink offcut and move it around the house to find the right lighting for photographs for Instagram. As soon as I fitted the worktop, I updated the photography on quite a few of my recipes, and even the ingredients looked fresher.”
Vikkie has used a Wilsonart laminate worktop in Marbre Veneto M022 to achieve the luxury look of marble, with all the practicality of laminate; a more affordable material, which is easier to measure, move and fit. You can read more about her project here.
